I spent this past Saturday afternoon napping. On this beach. In Bermuda.
I had no cell phone service. I left my daughter at home with my parents. Other than going to the gym, I did nothing productive for those 3 days that we were on vacation. I have to admit that after a crazy busy year, it was such a relief to take a break.
Taking vacations is good for both the body and soul. Being away gives the body a rest from the demands of our days and a chance to reboot. The commuting, sitting at a desk, and rushing to work takes its toll. I went to bed early and slept later than usual. My workout routine was different too, which challenged my body in a different way.
There are also health benefits to the mental break. Being away gave me a chance to think of fresh ideas for my classes and practice. Our vacation was only 3 nights, but it was enough. I felt like I was away for a week, and was ready to come home to my daughter.
I realize how hard it can be to go on vacation. Between work and family commitments, and the cost of travel, it’s not that easy to get away. However, I highly encourage it, even for just a night or two. If you can’t get away, maybe you can do a local day trip to a secluded beach and leave your phone off to disconnect. Or perhaps you can take a random day off of work and just sit and read outside. Another idea is to go to a day spa. Taking some time away from our everyday routines is a great way to recharge and reset — not to mention that it is necessary for our bodies and minds to rest.
As for me, I am feeling good and ready to get back into my routine. I am happy that I took a few days off to give myself a much needed break. Our daughter had a wonderful time with her grandparents, and I feel invigorated and well rested. Until next time…. I will dream of those blissful, clear waters.
