One of my local farmers markets opened yesterday! The best thing about this market is that it is literally in the parking lot of the park where I teach class. After class, the moms and I took our babies to the market, and it was so much fun.
I have several local farmers markets, but I love this one specifically for its convenience. Also, there are different types of vendors at this market, ranging from farmers selling produce, to the pickle man, to the apple orchard booth, to the amazing bread stand. This farmers market is great for me mid-week, when I am usually running out of food and don’t have time to get to the supermarket. Yesterday I discovered a vendor who sells fresh pre-made salads and iced tea sweetened with fruit, which make for a great lunch and a refreshing drink.
I love farmers markets for several reasons. First, it is important to me to know where my food is coming from. I love being able to eat food that comes from an hour away, instead of from across the county. I also believe in supporting my local farmers and small businesses. This helps me feel like I am a part of the community.
The variety at farmers markets is usually great. When I went yesterday, the produce booth had 7 different kinds of lettuce. Food is seasonal and changes between summer and fall. This promotes eating seasonally and focusing on what is fresh.
One of my favorite challenges is to buy a different vegetable every time I go to the farmers market, and see how I can cook it. Last fall, when there was a lot of fresh produce, I would try something new every week. This is a great way to experiment with cooking different types of food.
Farmers markets tend to pop up all over the country, whether you are in a city or a suburb. To find your local one(s), do a quick internet search and keep your eyes peeled for advertisements. You can also ask around your neighborhood for information on any nearby farmers markets.
I also have found that going to a farmers market is a great outing with kids, especially if they are outside. My daughter loves to look around at all of the different food for sale and people walking around. There was one time last fall when she knocked over a carton of grape tomatoes, but luckily the farmer was very understanding. The vendors appreciate the business, and I find it a lot more enjoyable than going to the supermarket.
Good luck finding your local farmers markets, and enjoy!
