On the ride home from nursery school, my daughter tells me that she learned the Turkey Song for Thanksgiving.
I watch her in the rearview mirror as she bops her head from side to side while singing:
“The turkey is a funny bird, it’s head goes wobble, wobble. And it only has one word: gobble, gobble, gobble!” She giggles at the silliness of the song and I find myself doing the same.
I love that my daughter is finally old enough to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, which is one of my favorite holidays. I appreciate the intent behind the holiday: to express gratitude, to contribute to those who are less fortunate, to spend time with family.
But, I have always found the start to the holiday season to be stressful in many ways: the crowds begin to descend on stores and I find myself overbooked with holiday obligations. Just going to the supermarket can be overwhelming with all of the stressed out shoppers. I always want to participate in the clothing and food drives in my town. For weeks, I have been meaning to clean out my hall closet for the local coat drive, but it has not happened yet.
I remind myself that it is ok, and I can donate the coats anytime.
As the frenzy grows around me, I intend to find time to express gratitude in simple ways: by loving my family and being patient with my toddler daughter. I want to practice gratitude by practicing kindness to those around me. This is the best way for me to express thanks to my family and friends in an authentic way.
To all of my readers: I am so grateful that you continue to spend your time reading this little blog of mine – thank you. I wish you all a Thanksgiving filled to the brim with kindness.
